Greatness is comparative.
Take David Cameron, for example. Nobody’s ever thought
of him as great with the possible exception of his mother and his dog. And his dog
doesn’t count because as Aldous Huxley had it, “To his dog, every man is
Napoleon; hence the constant popularity of dogs.”
But imagine David Cameron next to Angela Merkel and suddenly
he starts to grow and even look vaguely Churchillian.
Take their respective handling of the Syrian migrant
crisis.
Earlier this year while Merkel was bullying Greece into
accepting the latest “rescue package”, David Cameron was quietly funnelling a
billion pounds into the refugee camps in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon to keep a
lid on the as yet invisible crisis.
Then less than two
weeks ago, though it seems like a month, Merkel declared that any Syrian who reached Germany could claim
asylum. As you would expect there was a roar of adulation from the media,
which would even have chuffed Hitler in the Sportsplatz.
Ever since Cameron has been fighting a very brave rear-guard action, patiently
explaining that accepting more and more refugees just isn’t the answer; we have
to look after them in the region till they can return to their homes. Very brave
because of the media reaction to this plainest of common sense. In short
hysteria, Cameron is a heartless monster, racist Islamophobe, etc... Cue
various lying lefties and degenerate ex-rockers offering their own homes to the
“helpless (male, military-age, aggressive) refugees”.
Now there is an orgy of rape and intimidation going on
in the refugee centres in Germany as this letter from a well-known women’s
rights group attests. But you’d never know it from the German media. What they
do report is “Mutter Merkel’s” threat that, “There will be no tolerance towards
those who are not prepared to help”. Apparently she is a bit upset about any
dissent whatsoever to her will. Sound familiar?
Back in June The Independent reported the very
reassuring news that 98.3% of the 3.9 million Syrian refugees were safely bottled
up in camps in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and Turkey. Now following Merkel’s whim
they are on the move. And not only the Syrians as a report from the EU suggests
that they only amount to one fifth of the migrants marauding across Europe.
Merkel, clearly still in the first flush of a liberal righteousnessgasm,
said last Tuesday, “If we now have to start apologizing for showing a friendly
face in response to emergency situations, then that’s not my country!” She’s
got it back to front, of course. It’s the showing a friendly face to this
invasion that will guarantee that it won’t be her country. Mutter Merkel has sold
out everyone else’s future.
So I am swelling with national pride in David Cameron.
I know he is the not-particularly-bright-son-of-privilege; a creepy condescending
liberal; the heir to Blair who leads the Conservative party under false
pretences. Absolutely. But Merkel is making that very same Cameron look like
Metternich bestriding Europe like a colossus.
